Bath-time should be a time of relaxation, calming scents and warming bubbles, however when it comes to bathing your dog this can be an altogether different experience. There are of course some dogs who love a good bath and the obligatory ‘wet-shake’ that comes after, all over your previously clean bathroom. Then of course there are those dogs who hate baths or water of an kind, often resulting in a battle of wills between owner and animal.

It is therefore essential that dog owners keep other aspects of bathing their dog as stress free as possible! Choosing which shampoo to use may seem like a fairly stress-free decision, however choosing the wrong shampoo can cause endless issues for you and your pet. So many dog shampoos on the market today contain chemicals and ingredients that can be harmful for your dogs’ skin. Unbalanced pH products and those with soap added may be easily tolerated on tough human skin, but a dogs coat is much more sensitive and needs natural and neutral products that cleanse and care.

There are also a lot of options when it comes to choosing a natural shampoo, so how do you make the right decision for you and your pet? We have tried many natural shampoos here at The Dog Express and also have many favourites, but our focus in this article is on a shampoo from Earthbath that we had not tried previously. The choice of shampoos is exceptional and there literally is something for every dog.

Earthbath Shampoos

Earthbath is part of Earthwhile Endeavors Inc which was founded in 1995 by Paul Armstrong. From the very beginning, Earthbath was developed and created with only the most natural products in mind and it was always intended that the Earthbath brand would result in a natural , chemical free product, making both pets and their owners happy.

The Earthbath philosophy is to keep the health of a pet in mind first and foremost whilst creating their products, which is why the Earthbath shampoos and other cleaning products in the Earthbath range are soap free, pH-balanced, paraben free, phthalate free and made with human-grade ingredients. Paul even test all of the products personally – on himself!

Product Review

Earthbath have a range of products for bathing pets, including a spritz, wipes, and foam, however our product review is based on the wonderful range of natural shampoos that Earthbath offer.  The shampoos come in either pint (472ml) or gallon sizes and are available right across the US via the Earthbath website or in the UK and other countries via approved suppliers and online retailers such as Amazon.

There are currently 13 shampoos in the Earthbath range and each has its own special use and formula as well as smelling great and being effective. Examples of just a few of the shampoos in the range are:-

Clear Advantages – This shampoo has been specially formulated to be used in conjunction with topical flea products which you may already be using on your dog. Although many shampoos cannot but used during flea treatments, Clear Advantages’s ingredients make if perfect for use in conjunction with topical flea control products. It also has a wonderful almond scent and is hypo-allergenic and natural for your pooch.

Creme Rinse & Conditioner – This is a rinse conditioner that can be used after any of the Earthbath shampoos and is ideal for dogs with longer hair and easy tangle coats. It contains colloidal oatmeal which helps to enrich the skin and prevent drying and flaking.

Mediterranean Magic – This shampoo has been specially formulated for pet owners who want to eliminate strong odours from their dogs coat. Earthbath looked high and low for a natural essence that had deodorizing properties and eventually came across Rosemary which is renowned for its long-lasting scent and soothing properties.

All of the 13 shampoos available in the Earthbath range are 100% natural and are free from any ingredients that could harm or irritate your dog. They are soap free and have a neutral pH balance which ensure a clean, smooth and non-drying effect when bathing. The shampoos are each scented with natural essences making them smell fabulous and leaving a long-lasting, fresh scent on your dog after bathing.

Several of the shampoos are also topical flea treatment compatible meaning your dog does not have to miss out on a fabulous bath time just because they are having their routine flea treatment.

Our Verdict

At The Dog Express, we love companies and products that are created with pets not profits in mind and that is exactly the focus and philosophy at Earthbath. All of the products have been created using natural ingredients and have been tested and approved by both pet owners and their pets.

We decided to try the wonderful Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo on one of the eager Dog Express pooches because we already knew about the benefits of oatmeal on itchy, flaky skin in people. Our tester dog, Jay is a 9 year old Border Collie who is partial to having a bath because he knows he will get he favourite treat at the end of it….a good brushing!

We were very impressed by the solely natural ingredients contained in this shampoo which is made up of purified water, renewable coconut based cleansers, colloidal oatmeal (3%), aloe vera, almond and vanilla essences and olive oil squalene (natural preserve). It is easy to tell that the shampoo is gentle on the dogs skin because it is gentle on your own hands and does not dry your skin out after you have used it. The smell is also wonderful, although we had to use a bit more than directed on the bottle to get a tiny lather as Jay has such long hair, however this is due to the product being soap free – another benefit for natural product lovers.

Earthbath advise that this product is specially formulated to help relieve itchy, dry skin and of course oatmeal and ale vera are both recommended by veterinarians as having natural properties which combat skin irritations, promote healing and re-moisturise sensitive, dry skin.

After use we found Jay’s hair to be almost tangle free and very soft for brushing and drying, there was also a noticeable reduction in the amount of flaky skin after just the first use. Overall, we were very impressed with this product and would definitely recommend both the shampoo and the brand to any dog, at or horse owner looking for natural products to clean your pet.
